For our new Photo Assignment, the operative phrase is ‘back lit.’ This just means that one of the principle light sources for your image is behind your subject, whether that subject is a person, a pet or a mountain range. Back lighting presents some unique challenges for the photographer, since by its very nature, it means you’re shooting into a light source. You’ll have to be careful to control lens flare and you’ll need to carefully balance your foreground/background exposure. [Note: Just because your shot is back lit doesn’t mean the back lighting must be your ONLY light source….]
We’ll keep this assignment up for about two weeks. At that point I plan to put up a holiday-related assignment for the Christmas/New Year’s season.
Good luck and happy shooting!

I used a window as the back lighting and set my tripod at and angle. This wine stopper was a gift which I love, along with the colors purple and green, and wine.

Here's an example of a back lit photo, my Queen Elizabeth doll. Note the nice 'rim light' on her hair and shoulders, created since the light source is behind her.

My Mum and Dad's dog, Rosie, bringing her ball back from the Sun…or something like that…suffice to say, the sun was behind her.

The whole backlit thing was something demonstrated to me by the wildlife photographer Andy Rouse, who did a shoot with Rosie, my niece Isobel and myself, after we were shortlisted in a photo competition by a dog food company. Here's an example…

Ugh! Just in time for my contributing image to this assignment: "Spanish Moss".
As usual, the original image is stored on flickr. Used my iPhone with the HDR Pro app, most adjustments were done within the app to achieve the result. Cropping was done using Aperture 3.

11.343 – backlit
The setup consisted of a speed-light with a mini soft-box on it and a sheet of A4 80g white paper held between that and the CFL. No other light used.

In the 1st photo there is alot of reflected light evening out the light a bit. This was an overcast day so the light was softer to begin with.
In the 2nd photo there is a bit less reflected light.

I took this photo while walking the dogs at the local park last evening. I just love these tall grasses, though the name of them seems to be slipping my mind at the moment.
