Walking in our yard this evening, I was surprised to see a minor miracle: a single gardenia bloom in its prime, months after all of the rest of  the flowering had passed.  I made a few photographs, then picked the blossom and brought it inside for my wife: it’s one of her favorites. Like many of life’s surprises, this one is fleeting, but for my camera and the photographs captured here.

I really like the fleeting moment! i like your work.
it reminds me of the cactus (night blooming something) in my home that went from tiny, bulby blossom to full boom to withered away all in the space of one night. i shot until about 1:00 a.m., then the aftermath the next morning.

  2. We have a succulent here like that: only sets out a few blooms a year, and always only at night.
I haven’t successfully photographed one here yet.

  3. Oh, I can almost smell it! In the 60’s, I bought exotic drinks that came with a gardenia. Then I lived in Micronesia (Palau) in the early 70’s, and I actually had a gardenia bush at the front of the house. Fabulous images!

  5. They are wonderful, aren’t they? I don’t know of a better garden fragrance.
