There is nothing worse in the world for a photographer than to witness a photograph you can’t shoot because either: 1. you’re out of CF/SD cards; or 2. your camera battery has gone dead. Nothing worse!

This is the simplest but most profound of digital photography truths. You want to avoid this at all costs! So always, always double-check before you head out the door: do I have an extra CHARGED camera battery? Do I have enough extra CF/SD cards for the planned shooting activity?

Do this and you’ll never have to suffer that awful feeling, knowing that this calamity was completely your own fault! You’ll never have to curse your own incompetence, stupidity, ineptitute…you get the idea. So remember:  extra batteries, extra cards!

Got bitten once by this. Now I carry around two 4GB cards and a charged battery all the time. Sound advice!

Even that my battery mostly survives about a day or so, I usually do carry one spare, at least. During longer periods of unavailable power plug I carry up to 3 spares in total. Very similar set-up in CF cards… With that I will be self-containt for about a week.

Could not agree more! I have had disasters that are my fault entirely with flat batteries. It is one of the drawbacks of digital technology, thanks for this timely reminder.
